If you’re interested in the outdoors, CYC is the place for you. The partnership between CYC and the California Waterfowl Association (CWA) continues to enrich young CYC member lives. Throughout April and May CWA held a “Spring Wood Duck Series” at Grizzly Island. The wood duck sessions are providing a wonderful learning opportunity for CYC members and other groups like the Boy Scouts at Grizzly Island. The program was started because kids had expressed interest in wildlife and wildlife preservation, with a special interest in learning about wood duck boxes. These special boxes are made to represent tree hollows, where a particular species of duck nest rather than in the ground like most waterfowl. The students are receiving a first-hand look at how these unique boxes are made and what they are used for. In addition, the kids are learning about various waterfowl species, the special adaptations of wood ducks, and the importance of wetland habitats. Grizzly Island is the perfect classroom setting with the surrounding marshlands and different species of birds, including the White Tailed Herring. The kids “build” their own species of duck from various features of other animals. They even experience an outdoor walking safari to the nest boxes where they hone their observational skills and spark even more curiosity. CYC is very lucky to have access to the CWA’s educated staff. If you would like to participate in any of the Grizzly Island excursions, please contact Joe Coniglio at (925) 671-7070 ext. 220. You can bet it will be memorable. |
