April 2010

March was another busy month here at CYC for the Wrestling Program. The Winter Term promotion testing for the K-5 and middle school wrestlers went well with a combined total of 25 kids testing between the classes. The kids who passed the test received different colored shirts depending on their level of skill.
The wrestlers in the middle school level 2 class continue to excel at tournaments. On March 13 we sent seven kids to the Northern California Tournament of Champions, the premier tournament for middle school wrestlers in California. Five of the seven wrestlers came home with medals. Sixth grader Jaren Chavez placed 5th improving on his 6th place finish last year. Seventh grader Nathan Cervantez placed 2nd in his first appearance at the prestigious tournament. Eighth grader David Conte placed 6th, and Jon Jay Chavez repeated as champion for a second year in a row. Then, on March 20 and 21 we sent 9 kids to the Folkstyle State Championships in Fresno, CA with many of them coming home with medals.
Coming up in April we will be sending kids to the Northwest Regionals in Battleground, WA. This tournament is a qualifier for the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota later this year. We will also be attending the FILA Cadet National Championships in Akron, Ohio. Champions at the FILA Cadet National Championships will have the opportunity to compete at the Pan American Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, and from there they may have a chance to go to the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore later this year.
Wrestling Student of the Month is Jon Jay Chavez. He finished off the folkstyle season in impressive fashion as he was crowned champion of the prestigious Northern California Tournament and Champions for a second year in a row.
