The CYC wrestling program offers young athletes the opportunity to participate and excel in one of the world's oldest sports. The program trains and challenges wrestlers at all age groups from kindergarten through high school, and all experience levels from beginner to champion. July 2008
Competitions and tournaments kept the Wrestling Program busy the past month. The month began by CYC hosting the 2008 Junior Greco World Duals. The tournament included competitors from around the globe including teams from Germany, Estonia, Oregon, California, and a USA All Star Team comprised of athletes from around the nation. CYC wrestlers excelled at the tournament; Luke Sheridan place 1st; Alex Abono, Nick Jansen and Trevor Harvey placed 3rd; Nick Jansen and Joey Ramirez 4th; Jeff Forrester and Kyle Hardester placed 6th.
The week following the competition included a cultural exchange where CYC hosted the German and Estonian team. The week included a trip to an Oakland A’s game, an outing on the Flying A, tour of Sacramento and the State capitol, as well as the city of San Francisco. The exchange team and CYC wrestlers finished the week at the Freestyle State Championships on June 6 and 7 in San Jose. CYC members that placed in the tournament included: Orry Elor 1st; Darryl Aiello and Aviv Elor 2nd; Nathan Cervantez 3rd; Peyton Omania 4th; Justin Walker 5th; Westley Hart and Davino Lucido 6th.
Coach Halvorson had the opportunity to spend some time coaching CYC Alumni at the Olympic Trials in Las Vegas on June 13. The alumni included Ken Cook, Robby Smith, and Nikko Triggas. This was a wonderful experience to our younger members who attended the tournament. They were able to cheer for their coaches and watch a competition of the highest caliber.
The Month finished off with CYC sending eight wrestlers along with Coach Halvorson to the 2012 Junior Olympic Camp in Colorado Springs, CO. Congratulations to all the campers that participated.
