The Outdoor Activities Program is designed to give the youth of the CYC a rare
opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and all its benefits. The goal of the
CYC is to give every member the chance to learn and understand the importance
of nature conservation and further preservation. Our Outdoor Activities Program
helps youth to develop a love and appreciation for the outdoors, while experiencing
nature first hand. The CYC staff can accomplish these goals with the use of
Camp Nejedly, Camp Concord, Rancho Esquon and the ‘Flying A’.
The activities within our program
are available to all CYC members for a minimal fee or no cost. We aim to give every
child an opportunity to participate but those working especially hard and exhibiting
the core aspects of the CYC will be rewarded for their efforts.
All activities are voluntary and by no means mandatory.
Travel is required to
attend all Outdoor Activities with the CYC
Rancho Esquon is a 6,771 acre, full functioning farm,
located in Durham, CA, just outside of Chico, CA. The Ranch is home to 5,275 acres
of rice and almond fields, 1000+ acres of wildlife habitat, rice drying and storage
facility and a nesting bird hatchery.
While at the Ranch our youth get to participate
in everything from duck-egg salvages to tree planting, to fishing. It is possible
to see many of the 165 different species of birds, learn about fish migration,
egg incubation, farming processes, wildlife preservation and much more.
The ‘Flying
A’ is a 50 foot U.S. Coast Guard certified, 25 passenger vessel that the
CYC has been operating since May of 2007. The Boat Captain, Art Roby, is a U.S.C.G.
licensed Master for Bays and Oceans and has a vast knowledge of the entire San
Francisco Bay, surrounding locations and historical sights. The boat provides our
youth with a one of a kind experience to enjoy the beautiful San Francisco Bay.
The trips open the eyes of our East Bay residents who haven’t been given
the chance to see the Bay Area from the water and appreciate pieces of local history
important to the history of the United States. The ‘Flying A’ is available
for whale watching in migration season, fishing, wildlife and all around educational
trips with destinations to Angle Island, Pier 39, Jack London Square and more.
Camp Concord is a week long summer activities camp in South Lake Tahoe, run by
the City of Concord. The CYC has joined up with Camp Concord, to allow CYC kids
to participate in a wonderful program that has been helping local residents make
great childhood memories, since 1967. All kinds of outdoor activities are offered
at Camp Concord including, river rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, archery,
arts & crafts, sports and camp fires. This camp is open to all CYC members
at a discounted rate each year.
Camp Nejedly is an 80 acre property that was donated
to the Contra Costa Youth Council by Senator John A. Nejedly back in 1982. The
Camp is located in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains and is used by many private
and public groups. The CYC was given use of the property and has taken campers
up to Nejedly for many years. The remote camp ground boasts Hawley Lake, collections
of petroglyphs amongst the surrounding rocks and miles of hiking trails.
- All participants must have filled out all necessary
paper work before departing from the CYC for any given outing. This may include
copies of medical/immunization records.
- All participants are expected to represent
the CYC and abide by all behavioral rules and expectations. If poor behavior continues
and disciplinary action is necessary, the participant may be taken home or asked
to be picked up from said location.
- Proper attire for each activity is necessary.
A list of recommended attire and packed items will be provided before departure
of each trip.
- There will always be at least one male and one
female, responsible employee of the CYC at every event to supervise. If a CYC
parent wishes to volunteer to join an Outdoor Activities Program they are welcome
to with prior notice given to CYC staff.
- In the event that space is limited
on any given trip, we ask that parents offer up the space so that more CYC youth
can participate.
- Participants of the ‘Flying A’, Rancho
Esquon and Camp Nejedly must be at least 7 years-old due to the adventurous nature
of the trips.
- All participants of Camp Concord are required to be within
the ages of 8-14. This age division is set forth by the City of Concord and its
rules and regulations board.
