The CYC Outdoor Activities program is designed to provide youth with a rare opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and all its benefits. The CYC aspires to give kids an appreciation for nature and teach them the importance of its conservation and further preservation. The CYC staff is able to accomplish these goals with the use of Rancho Esquon, the 'Flying A' Boat, Grizzly Island Property, Camp Concord and Camp Nejedly. All of these locations and entities are available to give boys and girls a natural environment in which to explore and learn. More >

April 2010

The CYC trip to Rancho Esquon from March 5-7 was a fun trip where CYC members, along with the volunteer college chapter of CWA, worked on Wood Duck boxes. They cleaned out the boxes, replacing old nesting material with fresh material which is important for hens to comfort their brood. Loretta and Anthony Gardiner of the ranch staff organized a barbeque for the kids and volunteers. As far as the kids were concerned, this was the highlight of the trip. This trip also encompassed a CWA guest speaker, Kelly Rathburn, a true Wood Duck specialist. I would like to thank all parties for their continued efforts toward bringing new experiences to our CYC members.
Some of the wrestling students came out fishing on March 15 along with assistant coach Kenneth Cook. The kids caught some 30 fish, all Bat Rays and Leopard Sharks with one Seven Gill Shark in the mix. We had 9 kids who had their first trip on the Flying “A”, and they appeared to have a blast. Then, on March 21, boxers came out fishing and produced a few more keepers. Nothing beats the knowledge that students gain during their first boating experience.
On March 27 the Grizzly Ranch trip was educational, as always. The marshy wetlands of Suisun are always changing. Members of the Cheer Program attended a class on Wood Ducks. Outdoor Activities Student of the Month is Trevor Lopez, a young camper who has been on numerous OA trips, including Grizzly Ranch, Rancho Esquon and numerous trips out on the Flying “A”. He is always helpful and eager to learn.
