Mark Halvorson has developed a wrestling program at the Community Youth Center recognized both nationally and internationally. A former Greco National Champion, he also is the Head Wrestling Coach at De La Salle High School, one of the Bay Area's most prominent high schools. Since he took over the CYC wrestling program in 1998, the CYC has produced two World Team members, one Junior Pan American Champion, 61 All-Americans, 12 National Champions, 26 Regional Champions, 98 State Champions and 17 California Triple Crown winners. In addition, CYC has won 29 age group team state championships since he joined the organization.
Halvorson has also served as the California Greco Roman Head Wrestling coach, from 1996 to present, in addition to serving as Team California Coach for the National Junior Duals and National Cadet Duals. Team California has won five unofficial national team championships since he has been the head coach. Halvorson also serves on the California USA Wrestling executive committee. Along with California Wrestling he has helped co-produce The California State Developmental Program, camps and clinics, and in 1998 he was named the Western States Developmental Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling.
Halvorson has served recently with USA Wrestling in international endeavors including:
- 2006 - FILA Junior Greco Roman World Team Coach
- 2004 - FILA Junior Greco Roman World Team Tour Coach
- 2003 - Assistant coach for the University World Team that wrestled in the Olympic Hopes Tournament in Budapest Hungary
- 2001 - Team leader for the Junior FILA World Team that traveled to Uzbekistan for the World Championships.
- 2000 - Head Coach of the FILA Cadet World Team that traveled to Bulgaria and France.
- He also taken the CYC team to international competitions in France, Germany
and The Netherlands.
In his role as the Head Wrestling Coach for De La Salle High School in Concord California, which he took over in 1999, he has produced seven CIF State medalists, 14 North Coast Section Champions, and 27 CIF State Qualifiers. In 2004, Halvorson was also named the Contra Costa Times Coach of the Year.
Halvorson graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor Degree from San Francisco State University with a Social Science emphasis, and a California Single Subject Teaching Credential from Chapman University.
