  Katrena Cohea, ARAD
  Head Dance Instructor

Cohea joined CYC in early 2006 with more than 15 years of dance experience, including five years teaching at various Bay Area schools. A member of the Royal Academy of Dance, Cohea was trained in the RAD method at Benicia Ballet School, and she most recently passed her Advanced 2 RAD exam in July 2008 making her an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance.  She is currently studying with the RAD to become a certified teacher through their Ballet Teaching Studies program. She is also a trained Spanish and Flamenco dancer and performed with Carolina Lugo's Brisas de Espana, a local Flamenco and Spanish dance company for three years. Cohea was a member of the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance from 2003-2007, studying and performing ballet, modern and contemporary works under the direction of former Oakland Ballet and LINES Ballet dancer Summer Lee Rhatigan.

Cohea conducts her classes hoping to inspire in her students a love of movement and music. She encourages them to use their imaginations to express themselves creatively from an early age.  Cohea believes that ballet technique should be taught as a total body expression. This approach lets dancers access many ways of moving that broaden their overall dance technique and guide them to be strong, versatile and individual in their dancing.

In December 2006, Cohea brought The Nutcracker to the CYC Dance Program. Since then, The Nutcracker has become a holiday tradition at CYC, along with an annual Spring Showcase.  Cohea believes that performance is integral to dance education, and CYC dance performances have since become an exciting and favorite activity of dance students and the CYC community.

“CYC's foundations are built on bringing out the best in its students; we take the qualities that children naturally have, such as energy and enthusiasm, and harness those qualities to bring out the best in each student. I want my students to be able to see dance in everything and to be able to appreciate the artful nuances in the world around them.” - Katrena Cohea
