Community Youth Center Traditionally Holds the Event in the Summer

The 13th Concord Cup will try an October run for the first time on Saturday and Sunday at the Community Youth Center, 2241 Galaxy Court.

CYC coach Gary Sullenger has found that the late starting date – the tournament traditionally has been run during the summer – has generated huge interest in the Northern California among the competitors.

However, despite drawing a record number of participants, Sullenger said his out-of-state entries are down as younger participants might not want to travel with school in session.

“Usually, we would get several teams from Oregon,” Sullenger said. “We might have to move it back.”

Nevertheless, local boxing fans will have an excellent opportunity to see some of Northern California’s and Nevada’s top talent. Bouts begin at 2 p.m. both days and tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youths. A record 37 bouts will be held, starting with 18 on Saturday.

Two undefeated CYC boxes will take center stage Saturday.

In the girls novice division at 95 pounds, Concord’s Christal Barajas (5-0) will face Michelle Warren of Elko, Nev. Barajas is a dynamic boxer whose reputation has soared.

“She is extremely hard to match,” Sullenger said. “A couple of weeks ago I took her to a big, two-day tournament in Reno. Nobody would box her. I try to tell her that things like that are part of boxing. It makes it hard, but she has hung in there.

“Christal is progressing ahead of schedule. We really don’t have any girls her own age or size, so she does 80 percent of her sparring against boys.”

Also on Saturday, Pittsburg 13-year-old David Borjon (5-0) will face Woodland’s Brian Alvarez in a 132-pound novice bout. Borjon, who usually weighs 119, had to move up in class to get an opponent.

“David is extremely strong,” Sullenger said. “He is developing quickly and learning how to punch. He stopped his last kid in a hurry. He only has been doing this six months, but he pushes himself, and he has a great work ethic. Everything he does is 100 percent. If you looked at him, you would think he is 15 or 16. He is very defined for a 13-year-old.

Sullenger said Borjon stays around after workouts to do extra pushups and sit-ups. That drive should help him excel when he moves to open division bouts.

Besides featuring some of his own boxers, Sullenger has put together other interesting bouts. Stan Martyinouk, one of the West Coast’s top amateurs at 132 pounds, will box Sunday. The 21-year-old out of the Mateen Boxing Club of Sacramento has a 56-18 record and will face the winner of a Saturday bout between James Johnson of King’s Gym in Oakland and Santa Rosa’s Michael Contreras.

Martyinouk is kind of a technician,” Sullenger said. “He is very experienced and very ring savvy. He is the kind of boxer you would want younger kids to watch.”

An open division heavyweight bout matching Sacramento’s Mike Dubowski and San Jose’s Emmanuel Mendez will be held Saturday. Redwood City super heavy-weight Johon Banks will fight Sunday against the winner of Saturday’s bout between San Jose’s Alejandro Hernandez and Fairfield’s Harry Gopaul.

The Concord Cup exposes up more on a greater scale,” Sullenger said. “This will be the biggest tournament we’ve ever had. We decided to do a $5 kids ticket to get the word out. This solidifies our position in terms of allowing the kids to know we are here.”
